Silicone Extrusion Molding

Silicone extrusion molding (also called silicone extrusion) is a continuous manufacturing process used to produce tubing, cords, and custom profiles with a consistent cross-section. Unlike injection or compression molding (which create discrete parts), extrusion pushes silicone rubber through a precision die to form long, continuous lengths—ideal for seals, gaskets, weatherstrips, protective sleeves, and silicone tubing.

What Is Silicone Extrusion Molding?

Silicone extrusion is the process of forcing uncured silicone compound through a shaped die, creating a continuous profile that is then cured (vulcanized) and cooled to lock in its final shape. Because the profile is continuous, extrusion is one of the most efficient methods for making long-length silicone components with stable performance in heat, weather, ozone, and aging environments.

How Does Silicone Extrusion Molding Work?

A silicone extrusion line typically includes an extruder, a custom die, a curing system, and a pulling/cutting system. The extruder screw conveys and pressurizes the silicone material, pushing it through the die to form the target cross-section. After the profile exits the die, it passes through a controlled curing stage so the silicone becomes fully set, followed by cooling and take-off.

Extrusion is especially suitable when you need:

♦ Continuous length production

♦ Consistent cross-section geometry

♦ High efficiency for tubing and sealing profiles

♦ Flexible options for hardness, color, and functional additives

Silicone Extrusion Molding Process

(1) Confirm profile design (2D drawing / cross-section / key dimensions)
(2) Select silicone material (hardness, color, curing system, performance requirements)
(3) Build extrusion die (custom tool matched to your profile)
(4) Extrusion forming (silicone is pushed through the die to create the profile)
(5) Curing / vulcanization (profile is cured to achieve final mechanical properties)
(6) Cooling & sizing control (stabilize dimensions and surface finish)
(7) Cutting or coiling (cut-to-length, coils, or spooled output)
(8) Secondary operations (optional: splicing, punching, adhesive backing, printing, assembly)
(9) Inspection & packaging (dimension check + appearance + performance verification)

Our Silicone Extrusion Capabilities

We support custom extrusion for a wide range of silicone profiles and end-use requirements, including:

♦ Custom silicone profiles (solid and hollow sections)

♦ Silicone tubing & sleeves (industrial, consumer, and specialized applications)

♦ Sealing strips / weatherstrips for doors, windows, enclosures, and equipment

♦ Co-extrusion / multi-durometer (soft + firm zones in one continuous profile, where applicable)

♦ Color matching and appearance options (smooth, matte, textured)

♦ Secondary processing: cut-to-length, punching, slitting, splicing into rings/frames, adhesive backing, and custom packaging

Benefits
♦ Efficient production for long parts (continuous output)
♦ Lower tooling cost vs. many molded-part solutions
♦ Great for seals/tubing where the shape is constant along the length
♦ Flexible material choices (hardness, temperature resistance, additives)
♦ Strong weathering resistance for outdoor and long-life applications

Limitations
♦ Best for products with a consistent cross-section (complex 3D shapes are better molded)
♦ Very tight tolerances may require calibration and additional sizing control
♦ Holes, clips, and unique end features usually need secondary operations

Silicone Extrusion vs. Compression/Injection Molding

Choose silicone extrusion when:
♦ Your part is a long length profile or tubing
♦ The cross-section is consistent and you want high production efficiency
♦ You want a cost-effective solution for seals, strips, and continuous components

Choose compression/injection molding when:
♦ Your part is a 3D geometry (not constant cross-section)
♦ You need complex details, inserts, or tight molded features
♦ The part must be produced as individual pieces directly from a mold

Material Options & Compliance Support

We can help you select the right silicone compound based on your application needs, such as:

♦ Temperature range and aging resistance

♦ Hardness (durometer), elasticity, compression set targets

♦ Color matching and appearance requirements

♦ Regulatory needs (e.g., food contact or other compliance requirements depending on your market)

If you have a specific standard or test requirement, share it with us during inquiry so we can match the most suitable material and documentation.
